Parent carer support groups

One of the ways you can be supported in your role as a carer is by attending parent support groups. Your child does not need a diagnosis to attend a support group.

"When I attended my first support group meeting I was a little bit nervous, but once we all got chatting and telling our stories of our little ones, I felt at ease and it was nice to hear that you are not alone with it all. We laugh, have a cup of tea, exchange ideas, and yes there has been tears, but the support and information you leave with helps you through the difficulties that we and our children face."

Ings Plus East Hull Teen Group

For young people aged 11+ who have autism or any other special need. 

The group offers the chance to learn new social skills, and create new friendships whilst having fun – all within in a safe environment. Children must be accompanied by their parent/carer. Siblings are welcome to join in as they are also part of the family and support can be given. Parents are always willing to listen to any problem, give advice, help with paperwork and direct to relevant organisations.

This group is a (closed) Facebook support group for parent carers and family members of autistic children/adults

OCD support


COVID UPDATE - We ask due to government guidelines restricting the number of attendees that people book a space.

Support for people who are affected directly or indirectly (family and friends) by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), BDD and hoarding symptoms.  We welcome anyone aged 16 years + (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).

There are two groups:

Adults who have either Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, is a parent/carer or just has an interest in diabetes.

YPSG (York Parents Support Group for children and young adults with diabetes).

No regular meetings - do organise events for children with diabetes who attend York Hospital.

Dyslexia Sparks

Dyslexia Sparks is Hull and East Yorkshire’s only registered charity for dyslexia. We support dyslexic individuals of ages to fulfil their potential by providing dyslexia assessments and specialist tuition. We also offer training to schools, colleges and organisations. We extend our support to the families of dyslexic individuals and offer free advice and guidance, plus parent support groups and workshops.

Our parent support group is free to attend and run the second Thursday of every month during term time. Come along for an opportunity to meet other parents of dyslexic children and gain advice from our specialist team. We often feature guest speakers and particular topics too.
