National Citizen Service (NCS) - Volunteering Opportunities

Description

The NCS is a youth programme for young people aged 16 and 17 years old that runs across England and Northern Ireland. There are two local providers across the East Riding that support young people with NCS, these are Flying Futures and Tigers Trust.

NCS is an experience specially designed for 16-17 year olds, however if your teen has a disability or mental health concern we can apply to extend this offer to young people up to the age of 24. We look carefully at any additional needs of young people and where possible make any adaptations to the programme to ensure all young people can participate.

We give young people a few weeks out over the summer holiday to meet new people, try new things and cover new ground. We’re all about helping teenagers realise their potential, by giving them a taste for independence and loading them up with new skills so they can go on to smash their future goals.

As a national youth programme, NCS is made up of lots of regional providers - and that’s where we come in. (Hello!) We’re Flying Futures and we’re your local NCS provider.

Technically a spot on our three-week programme costs around £1,500 but because we’re government-funded, we only ask for a contribution. The most you’ll pay is £50, and we also offer bursaries - so everyone can do NCS.

NCS is a 3 week, 4 phase programme that takes place in the Summer Holidays (June, July, August). All young people aged 16 and 17 can take part and activities/sessions can be adapted to accommodate for all needs.

The breakdown of phases looks like this:

Phase 1 - Be Epic:

We will spend 5 days, 4 nights away from home at an activity centre near Liverpool. While away, the young people will take part in adventurous, outdoor activities such as Watersports, Archery, Bush craft and an expedition day. In the evening, they have several choices of what to do, they can play some games, chill with friends or even take a nap. All accommodation and transport is provided during this week, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner. A kit list will be provided pre-departure, this will detail what each young person should bring with them.

Phase 2 - Live Life:

We will spend another week (Monday-Friday) at the University of Hull, in the brand new, state of the art, £200 million on site, student accommodation. This week is about the young people developing life skills and preparing them for their future. They will learn about fending for themselves with our 'Come Dine With Me' challenge, become Firefighters for the day at a local Fire Station and create their own Manifesto in a politics workshop among much more! On the Thursday evening, we will have a big party to celebrate 2 amazing weeks away from home. Just like the first week, All accommodation and transport is provided, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Phase 3 - Do Good:

After an amazing 2 weeks away, we will now turn our attention back home to doing some good for others. In their teams of up to 16, young people will brainstorm some ideas of a project that they might like to do, these ideas will then form a 'Social Action Project' which will benefit their local area, the country or in some cases, even the world.

Phase 4 - Go Party:

After an unforgettable summer, meeting new people, trying some amazing activities and making a difference, all of the young people will be invited to our 'NCS Graduation'. This will be a great way to cap off NCS. All young people will be presented with a certificate signed by the Prime Minister and the night will finish with a huge party in the Hull University Asylum Nightclub.
