Barnardo’s Occupational Therapy and Sensory Integration Therapy Service
Our team of therapists qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy and have further developed their skills through a post graduate certificate in Sensory Integration Therapy.

Our therapy and intervention is based on Sensory Integration (SI) theory. SI is defined as “the neurological process that organises sensation from one’s own body and from the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment” (Ayres 1972a cited in Bundy, Lane et al 2002). When difficulties occur with SI, the brain does not process sensory information effectively and therefore the individual does not receive precise information about himself or the world (Ayres 2005).

Difficulties with SI can impact on occupational performance and engagement of every day tasks and activities; it can also impact on an individual’s behaviour, attention, learning and emotion. Early identification of sensory integration difficulties can enable a child to develop more effectively through therapy intervention.

Some children may have no other diagnosis but may present with difficulties during schoolwork, catching a ball or personal care. Other children may have a diagnosis such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyspraxia or developmental coordination disorder.

The service offers assessment, training and intervention
0-25 years
Location and access
Our team are experienced in assessing children and young people’s needs within the home, clinic  and in the community and developing treatment and intervention to the children’s need. Between us we have 30 years experience of supporting children with a wide range of both physical and learning disabilities, developing a range of hands on skills and knowledge. The service base is outside Beverley at Holme on the Wolds. There is a Sensory Integration Clinic adjoining the main building. The service covers Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire but can also, subject to availability, cover any surrounding area.

The clinic has ample car parking and there is a disabled toilet in the main building. The clinic has 2 steps into the sensory room but this would only be accessed following an initial assessment to ensure the therapy is required. Staff are trained in moving and hoisting and there is a mobile hoist. There is also a small room where parents can wait whilst their child accesses clinic.
Access to this service
Access to the service is through referral but families can self-refer. There will be an initial enquiry form to ensure that the therapy is suitable. There is a cost for the service.

The assessment is tailored to the child’s individual needs.

The 1:1 assessment will use standardised and non-standardised tests and observational assessments depending on the needs identified. The assessment may look at a child’s sensory processing, gross and fine motor skills, self-care and independence skills, neuromuscular development and visual perception skills.

Observations can take place in the child’s home, school, clinic or community depending on the area of difficulty identified.

An assessment evaluation will be completed prior to treatment in an understandable, written form which will clearly identify the child’s sensory integration needs and recommendations.

Intervention (If Identified as a Need)
Intervention sessions can include direct 1:1 or group treatment targeted towards identified goals. The use of active therapy involving specialised equipment encourages the child to participate in challenging activities and develop adaptive responses. Intervention can take place in the home, schools or in a clinic depending on the child’s identified need and goal. Regular parent/teacher feedback will be used to evaluate the progress.
